My justification was that, if 3x5 is good enough for SS, it's good enough for me. However, if you're just starting out, I have found that 5x5 was the way to go for me and saw a lot of progress on SL5x5. I've since switched back to 5x5 with some accessory after the main lifts. 5x5 is an unnecessary amount of volume to begin with. With that said, I saw a post on another forum that said it would be fine for a noob to go 3x5 for the main lifts and 2x8 for the accessories (i.e., the "cut" version of ICF) since they'd still get 90ish% of the gains of the 5x5 version.
